Fashion Designer in Focus
Still considered a new kid on the block, Australian fashion designer Kym Ellery has no time in her world for hesitation and uncertainty. Less than three years ago her self titled label Ellery was just a mere dream floating somewhere along the horizon, yet, she has continued to amaze us with her smorgasbord of delectable pieces. Ellery can be described simply as the epitome of s-e-x appeal and is the name uttered on the lips of every sartorialist-crazed woman out there.
Ellery’s recently debuted Autum/Winter 2010 collection entitled A Tribute to Doctor Strange hasn’t come far from her first appearance in Spring/Summer 2007. It maintains its strong focus on the woman- the woman who knows what she wants, the woman who is strong, confident and always ahead of the fashion pack, the woman who is simply, indestructible. A Tribute to Doctor Strange features refreshing well-cut fabrics and modern designs and shapes. It encapsulates this season’s hottest trends- over the knee boots, feathers, one-shouldered dresses and the softest of silks. There’s a strong focus on the neutral colour palette that consists mainly of grey marl, black, bone and white while the occasional bright red add an unexpected contrast.
Kym Ellery has come along way from her childhood in hometown Perth. She studied fashion design in Perth before moving to London to study at leading fashion school, Central Saint Martins. From there, she came back to home turf to become the Russh Market Editor before later launching Ellery in 2007. Since then, she has been caught in a whirlwind, as her designs have appeared in editorial spreads for Australia Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Russh and Madison. I don’t see Ellery hiding away anytime soon, (thankfully for us!); a collaboration with everybody’s favourite fashion chain store Sportsgirl expected to hit stores this April/May. Make sure you keep a close eye out for that because I think the pieces will literally fly out the door!
The focus on unique yet wearable designs is what continues to drive the Ellery label, offering us collection after collection of intricate detailed designs that make us sigh with amazement. Kym describes her designs as ‘chic, sculptural and fashion-forward,’ and I don’t think I could have summed it up in a more perfect way. Every piece of the collection is amazing and if I could, I’d be more than happy to buy it all.
