Meet the Designer: Discrete
We sit down with 20yr old kiwi designer Scott Kennedy to get to know the face behind the up and coming label- Discrete. Already established as one of the fastest growing labels in New Zealand, Discrete is slowly taking over our stores here too in Australia, currently being stocked at Black Anchor Collective in Brisbane and soon to be many more. We ask Scott to finish the sentences to tell us a bit about Discrete and how he came to owning his own label.
I started Discrete because…
I found it hard to find cool clothes that I could actually afford so I decided to try making my own. My Aunty spent some time sewing in factories in America on her OE so she was a big help. At first I just made for myself but soon I was making for friends and friends of friends. I was really inspired though to start putting more time and effort into what was just a hobby after a retail store worker complimented my shirt and asked where I had bought it- and yeah…things kind of just grew from there I guess!
The best parts of my job are….
Always meeting new people- from retail store owners to fabric dye factory workers and that no two days are ever the same, every day is different and offers new challenges. Also, the buzz of seeing something I’ve designed being worn by a complete stranger is something that still hasn’t worn off.
One thing I couldn’t live without is…
My MacBook as well as my iPhone because they are essential parts of the label and keep me entertained. I wasn’t paid by Apple to say that…wish I was.
In the next month we will be…
Releasing our 2012 winter collection into stores and have our new website up and running- discreteclothing.co.nz
